Loulou Cherinet

Sweden
1970
Loulou Cherinet, born in 1970 in Gothenburg, Sweden, is a Swedish-Ethiopian visual artist whose work challenges preconceived ideas, prejudices, and clichés through a blend of documentary character and artistic exploration.

Her pieces often turn roles and ideas on their heads, combining contrary positions or viewpoints to render the overall image more complex and to instigate a reevaluation of normalized perceptions. By shifting events into different contexts, Cherinet creates a sense of displacement, inviting viewers to question their understanding and assumptions.

Educated at Addis Ababa University School of Fine Art & Design and the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm, Cherinet lives and works in Stockholm, where she also serves as a professor at Konstfack University College of Arts, Crafts, and Design. Her artistic practice, which largely unfolds outside Sweden—primarily in Ethiopia—employs film and installation as tools for exploration, probing into the fabric of societal norms and cultural narratives.

Cherinet’s work reflects on various ways preconceived ideas manifest and influence societal structures, offering insightful commentary on cultural identity and the complexities of belonging. Through her art, she seeks not only to critique but also to open dialogues and offer alternative perspectives on how we engage with the world around us.
